Wow ! This is absolutely brilliant ! I always wanted to try a pumpkin carving (I usually work in wood), but haven't done it so far.
This is an amazing good work!

Is there a secret to make it easier to carve crisp detail? I'm trying to figure this medium out but you guys have really mastered this. Looks great.

thank you! hmm...no secret really. I barely even use that many tools. I wish I were able to use more but nothing really works. I have hundreds of sculpting tools that I use at any given time for my sculpture work but carving is basically a few loops and a curved paring knife blade. Just playing with light and shadow is all you have to do. Make sure you have a nice sharp knife for anything you want so be nice and sharp. other than that, just push the limits of the pumpkin by getting the deepest parts of the carving as deep as you can.

Have you seen Ray's dvd? It's really worth it's weight in pumpkin lol.. but seriously, he breaks it down easy enough for anyone to do really and its honestly what I used to learn how to carve. I searched high and low and found nothing else available unless you want to carve frilly little wood spirit type creatures. This was the first carving that I did while watching his tutorials.

Sweet. Thanks for the tips, I'll keep experimenting. I was considering his dvds, but now I know they're good I'll go ahead and order them.
